Comment: On the '67 - '68 cruise Lt. Slate was the Combat Cargo Officer. He was one of the finest officers I encountered. Do any of you have any current information on him? Keep up the good work, Ed. We appreciate it. Thanks to this site I have made contact with a few of my shipmates. This summer I had the pleasure of sharing a cup of coffee with Mickey Moore and meeting his family. I'm happy to say we both look exactly the same as we did in 1968.

Comment: The Tulare crew was the best I ever served with. We had a job to do and we did it well. A comment cwo2 Julian USMC made to me when we were at ESO school (I think I got It right) Helo land school enlisted . He said I will never understand Sailors, but they are the hardest workers I have ever seen. the dates I was aboard about 1969 until 1972 when I went to Recruiting duty, Ended up in my hometown Evansville, Indiana. I emailed a couple you guys, Hope your still not P-----.---. I think you made a better leader of me, and I know your a better person. I just looked at my cruise book, November 1970- may 1971, A lot of the good memories come back. I don't remember a bad day aboard the Tulare. Best Crew Hardest workers, and men that I trusted with my life. Steve http://www.yourcommissary.com is my web site at 61 I still work 7 days a week.

Comment: Quartermaster serving under Chief Jordan and John Natter. Would like to hear from other mates from this time period. I went on to LCU's out of Danang hauling cargo and ammo to Chu Lai, Dong ha, and Phu Bai. After 4 years active, got out and joined the Seabees in Abilene Texas. Went back to Nam for a year 68/69 time frame driving heavy equipment, & working in a MARS station. I remember quartermasters Alex Sanchez and John Roan. After I left Tulare, a lot of my memory is a blur. I just remember spending a lot of time in Viet Nam on the river boats (LCU's) and up near Vinh Dai with the Seabees. I never dreamed the Tulare had a web site. I'll check out our cruise book when I get home tonight and hopefully it'll bring back more memories. The Tulare was a great ship and I wish I could go back aboard it in the moth ball fleet.

Comment: Lots of memorable times and people from the Tulare. When I got off the ship in Okinawa, I had been on her the longest of anyone on board, (I believe), and it sure felt that way. Served in deck force, deck department yeoman, crane operator for condition 1A and man, all those bridge watches. Have been in touch with several crew members, Jerry Laux, Rick Begley, and would like to find Jim Schell out of Sacramento. I have worked in hospitals for the past 28 years but those 3 years and none months on Big T will stand out forever, taught me how to work. Wish all of you well and smooth sailing.

Comment: Hi Ed, I served on the Tulare from June of 1964 until January of 1967. I Was an ICC, making it shortly after I came aboard. By 1965, a Chief Electrician by the name of Webb had the Electric shop. I had the IC gang and the electrical systems on the boats. The Electrician that took care of the boats was an EM3/EM2 by the name of Bottenfield. The Chief EM before Webb wasn't much at taking care of his job, so I was "Volunteered" to get the boats back in shape and I had hand picked Bottenfield for the job. He had one EM with him, but I have forgotten his name. I do remember that 1966 was a tough year on the ship... Captain Thompson and Commander Mathews had been hand picked as the reliefs because of their people skills.

I remember a tall EM, first name Clem and Dubey. Of course, there was Lt. Wynn, the Chief Engineer. Mr. Wynn passed away about 15 years ago. I used to subscribe to Navy Times and I saw the notice in there. By the way Mr. Wynn was a 2nd class engineman when he applied for the officer program that he got into. Chief Webb used to get so irritated with Mr. Wynn. Webb and I would be up on deck watching boat or cargo crane operations and of course those big winch motors would be getting pretty hot. Invariably, Mr. Wynn would call Webb over and say "Chief this motor is getting too hot...I think you should dip and bake it". And of course there was nothing wrong with the motor and adding more winding varnish would simply lock in more heat. Chief Webb would walk back to me, muttering the whole time. HA! He would swear that someday he was going to do just that. On one of those occasions, he got so disgusted that he called Clem and Dubey and had them shut it down right in the middle of the operation and told them to start tearing it down. Mr. Wynn came running back out after he was called by the skipper and asked Webb what he was doing. Webb's reply was "just what you told me to do". Needless to say Mr. Wynn never again mentioned the "over heated" motors to Chief Webb.

My major assignments during the career were four ships, the USS Notable MSO 460 was the first at Charleston, SC, the Tulare was next, the USS El Paso LKA117 was next and then the USS Leahy DLG/CG16. The last two were homeported at the time in Norfolk, Va. Before coming to the Tulare, I had a three year tour of duty as an Instructor at IC "A", school Great Lakes. When I decided to continue my career in early 67, I attended IC"B" school and then stayed on as an instructor and after I made E-8, was moved into the front office to run the school. I've always looked upon my Navy career as something very special. For the past 4 or 5 days, I've been looking up my old ships and that is how I came across your wonderful site. Thought I would drop a line to thank you for the web site. Louis Kopp EMCM, USN ret

Hi,

I am Amy L. Thompson, daughter of Robert D Thompson, USN (ret)... I noticed that you are lacking a photo of him on your website... I might be able to scan one in for you if you are interested... I am the youngest of 7 children and did not know a lot about dad's naval career, so now I am searching and learning... I am sad to say, that dad passed away Aug 24, 1992...but his legacy lives on in many ways. Let me know if you would like a photo...

Thanks, Amy

From: Ed Mersich

Hello Amy,

Thanks for the note. I am sorry to hear of your dad's passing. I served in Tulare from 1965 to 1968 and Capt Thompson was my last CO. As an enlisted sailor I didn't associate with the officers, especially the captain and exec. However I did have one occasion to have a one-on-one with your dad. It was in the fall of 1967; we were engaged in amphibious operations in Viet Nam waters. We were preparing for 1-A (cargo and boat operations). I was a boat electrician at the time and had to climb into all the boats on deck to connect the batteries in preparations for the next morning's operations. It was dark and I had to do my work by flashlight. As I was working in the boat, the captain (your dad) climbed into the boat. He caught me by surprise, the Capt. asked what I was doing, as I explained he asked to hold the flashlight for me. He asked me the usual personal questions, and tried to make small talk. I, not being used to chatting with captains did not come across as a brilliant conversationalist. It was the only occasion when a captain took a personal interest in my work. I appreciated the visit from him then, and still think it was great all these years later. I detached from Tulare in January of 1968 and met again with Capt Thompson, at that time. He gave me a signed photo of the ship, I still have the photo; and now that I know of your Dad's passing it's even a greater treasure.

Yes, I would very much like to have a photo of your dad to post on the web site.

Best regards, Ed Mersich, Elizabeth, CO

Hi Ed,

Thank you so much for your memories...they have touched all ( mom and the 7 children) of our hearts. This little bit of your life and experience with dad will now be part of our history...as well as yours. I want to thank you for your time in the military...that was a tough time for all of you...myself being 38 years old, obviously don't remember much about Viet Nam...dad did not talk much about what all he did! Nor, was I really interested until I was an adult... Your comment regarding conversing with the CO (dad) made us all smile...I too, never really came across as a brilliant conversationalist with him! So you aren't alone! Thanks again, Ed...here are two photos that I found that might be appropriate for the Website...and please let me know if you need any information regarding his military career, I would be happy to provide! And, if you are in San Diego, and visit the Zoo...let me know, I would love to meet you and your family!

Be well, Amy Thompson

Comment: Spoke with Bud Carlson and Roger Mort yesterday. Anybody know why we made a fast trip to Okinawa in Fall '65? First impression of the TU when I boarded? No A/C. I used to sleep curled up in a ball in the radar equipment room. Great liberty in Sasebo. A visit to Nagasaki. All those ropes from the forward gun tubs to the small boats below in Bangkok. Hmmmm. Did we sink one of our own boats in Hong Kong or did we just come close? Remember the newspaper the next day? Had to leave your ID card in the bar in Kaohsiung when leaving with a lady. Shore patrol in Singapore. Into an opium den with a British sailor to remove another. Heavily armed. Did I mention great liberty in Sasebo? First SP in Subic. Stood on the bridge from the base to Olongapoo for 8 hours. Yikes! The night before I flew back to the states (and the TU left from Subic) some shipmates purchased for me some time with a bar maid. Total fox. $25. Three or four times the going rate... Still have her picture. Total fox. Sweated discharge blood test for the next few days. Lucky. Arrived home in mid August '66. Could not get warm. Froze. Started college 3 weeks later. First class? Music Appreciation. Serious relevancy problems. Only vet on campus. After TET college was a tough place to be. Graduated in June '70. Corporate job. All WWII vets. Kent State, riots. Treated me just like any other anti war hippy. Tough place to be. I believe a trip to Sasebo may cheer me up! Thankyou TU. Good times, bad times, great people.

Comment: Excellent job on the Site! Was looking for pictures of all the ships I served on during my 27yr career and stumbled across your site. Have been on it for three hours reading all the individual comments. Had a number of rewarding tours during my career but because of the men I served with during the "Back, to Back, to Back" Nam cruise's Tulare was where I grew up both as a Sailor and a Man. The examples set and the "Lessons of Life" learned stayed with me throughout my career. If anyone knows how I can contact RDC Loslie (last time I saw him he was LT. Loslie), RD2 Erker, RD1 Welsh, RD3 Bruner (Bubble Butt), SM1 Alligood, SM Ziegler please contact me. Reading all the comments not only brought back a lot of great memories it also let me once more feel that "Professional Pride" we all felt by being members of the "Tulare Team" doing what we did best "Landing the Landing Force" at Da Nang and Chu Lai.

The Tulare went reserve as you know and we only had 2 quartermasters and they did not need me in the post office all the time. I am in Columbus Ohio and have many good memories about the Tulare. When I reported to ths ship Cmdr R.F. McCullough was the captain and Floyd Harrison Fields was xo. Then Capt Jack Roundtree took over. If you have any more information about reunions or anything else about the ship, it would be greatly appreciated if you would let me know.

Comment: Great to find this site.I have enjoyed reading about The Tulare. I was looking for information on the USS Mathews AKA 96. This site brought back old members, for we The Mathews was at the same places your ship was in Vietnam. The Mathews was part of the task force to DaNang, Chu Lai and Hue that painted over our name and number. I was hoping to find information on a reunion of the Mathews AKA 96, so if you hear of anything please let me know. I left the Navy and went The Air Force/GaANG and retire this September. Maybe I'll be able to see the Tulare if she's still mothballed after my retirement. God's speed to all of your crew and happy reunions.Keep up the good work. Well done. Phillip L. Tulare crew member from 4/58 to 6/61
Comment: Went to the Big T right out of RMA School in Bainbridge MD. I liked serving on the Tulare and often think about it and all the people I met and the good times. There was no war or conflicts at the time, but we still practiced a lot for that eventuality... My 1A station was the boat group commanders boat. GQ was in the radio shack. Entering/leaving port was on the bridge. Would like to here from anyone, especially in my time period of '58-'61.
